Initially, this sump had a breached riser pipe, allowing fine gravel (left) to intrude. The existing vertical multi-stage pumps would only last a few weeks before catastrophic failure (below).

After the riser was repaired and the sump cleaned out, there was still some suspended fines in the pumped fluid.
Even though the fines could not be seen by the naked eye, they still damaged the existing vertical multi-stage pumps. Pump flow rate would deteriorate to unusable levels over a matter of months (left).
Sligo System Series 3 pumps (left) replaced the existing vertical multi-stage pumps in late 2003 and have not experienced any deterioration in flow rate.
